Surgeons
against Routine Circumcision
Manifesto
After reviewing and analyzing the
pros and cons of circumcision in males in the Philippines and after knowing the
2002 stand of the Philippine College of Surgeons and three prominent Filipino
pediatric urologists on circumcision (see http://xtulepinoy.tripod.com),
We, the surgeons in the
Philippines, hereby resolve to DISCOURAGE routine circumcision in the
Philippines by
1. Informing the
public (inclusive of parents and prospective male newborn and adolescent
patients) that
1.1 there are no
medical benefits with routine circumcision;
1.2 circumcision
should be done only when medically indicated such as in phimosis (restrictive
foreskin) with recurrent urinary tract infection;
1.3 circumcision
should NOT be done just because of fear of being teased as “supot”;
1.4 circumcision
at birth should NOT be done routinely not only because of the abovementioned
reasons but also because it is unnecessarily painful; and
1.5 there is no
such thing as “painless circumcision”.
2.
NOT promoting “Operation Tule”.
